Cherry radishes fatten villagers’ wallets

At present, the high mountain cherry radishes in Yangjiahe Village, Duanlongshan Town, Guzhang County are ripe. Villagers are busy pulling and cleaning them, which will be sold to Zhangjiajie and other places.

High mountain cherry radishes are drought and cold resistant. They have strong adaptability and a short growth cycle. Generally, they can be harvested within 30 to 40 days, and new varieties can be planted immediately after plowing.

Cherry radishes are planted in Yangjiahe Village six times a year, with a yield of about 1,750 kilograms per mu (about 0.067 hectares) per time, increasing villagers’ income.

The village is located in the Wuling Mountains, with an average elevation of 880 meters. It is a remote and mountainous area with a small per capita arable land and many barren mountains. In the past, it lacked industries to boost villagers’ income.

The Changsha Branch of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank dispatched a working team to Yangjiahe Village in April 2018, and donated a total of 12 million yuan to improve infrastructure and develop industries in the village.

The village has cultivated cherry radishes, tea leaves, tobacco leaves, and yellow peaches, which have brought employment opportunities and economic benefits to the villagers. In 2023, the villagers achieved an annual per capita disposable income of 23,000 yuan. The village pays for the new rural cooperative medical insurance fees for the villagers with the collective economic income.

“Previously, there were no outsiders in the village, but now many enterprises and tourists come here for inspection and vacation. The village is making efforts to build a countryside suitable for tourism and wellness,” said Tang Qingchao, an industry expert in the village.
